Welcome to Hamburg

The Hamburg Welcome Center provides advice and assistance to all new residents from Germany and abroad.

In addition to granting and extending the residency permits of foreign managers and skilled employees, the centre takes care of the domicile registration process. The centre also offers free advice on a wide range of issues related to living in Hamburg and Germany at large. For example, it provides information on healthcare, schools, childcare services, leisure-time activities and accommodation.

The International Office of the Guest Services department at DESY addresses all questions related to a stay in Hamburg. The services it offers are extensive. For example, it provides information on medical insurance and the law relating to foreigners, reserves rooms in guest houses, offers help in finding accommodation and provides assistance on all non-scientific issues that are of relevance to a scientist or family members that might be accompanying him or her. The International Office cooperates closely with the Hamburg Welcome Center. Documents that international scientists require for their stay in Hamburg are jointly prepared by the two organizations and can be handed over to the HWC at specific collection times for further processing.

The staff of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School will gladly assist doctoral candidates who wish to write or are already writing a thesis about a PIER research field subject. Regardless of whether you are from Germany or abroad, you can contact us regarding any questions you may have. We will help you get your questions answered and issues resolved. To ensure that this is the case, we work together very closely with the above-mentioned organizations.

DOIT, the PhD student representatives at DESY and Universität Hamburg have compiled a compact and informative info flyer for students who are about to start their PhD in Hamburg. It contains useful links and tips on the enrollment procedure, housing, public transport, international affairs and sports and leisure activities.
