In Hamburg, biomedical research has strongly focused on structural biology for many years now. Universität Hamburg and the University Hospital in Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) conduct infection biology research that is devoted specifically to host-pathogen interactions. The pooling of the university’s capabilities with those of non-university research centres in the Hamburg metropolitan area has created an internationally outstanding research network whose unique methodology is further strengthened by unparalleled pioneering technology that uses DESY’s synchrotron and laser radiation sources.
