There are currently two regular English courses for PhD students on the Bahrenfeld campus, which are reserved for registered members of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School. Postdocs and PhD students from other graduate programmes in the PIER research fields may also participate upon request.

The English courses are part of our language module "Negotiation and networking in English" that is specifically designed according to the needs of researchers in science. Our teacher is a native speaker with many years of experience in teaching scientists and graduate students.

All courses are a cooperation of the PHGS with IMPRS-UFAST, CUI and EMBL.

Writing and presenting in academia
Teacher: Louise Kennedy

GROUP A: Tuesdays, 5-6:30 p.m., SR 1b, building 1 (exceptions: 24 Jan, 25 April, 24 Oct 2017, room 07a/building 7; 7 Nov 2017,  room 01.060/building 99)

GROUP B (from 9 January 2017): Mondays, 4:30-6:00 p.m., seminar room 116, building 61

At a basic level, a PhD is about developing the skills of a professional academic researcher. However, without a set syllabus to follow, how do you develop those skills? In this course, we will focus on the vitally important and challenging key skills of writing and presenting in your second language. You will explain the concepts and/or key parts of your research and then structure them in formal written and spoken English. Through active drafting and speaking practice followed by direct feedback, you will be able to produce clear academic texts and also present your research with improved levels of fluency.

Registration: Via e-mail to graduateschool@pier-hamburg.de

Rhetoric and pronunciation for scientists
Teacher: Louise Kennedy

This course is for scientists whose mother tongue is an East Asian language, and it is the pronunciation part that is specifically geared at native speakers of East Asian languages. Moreover, participants improve their skills in verbal presentations of scientific results with an emphasis on conferences and expert discussions. The focus is on rhetoric, strengthening vocabulary and effective pronunciation for successful information exchange.
