Name: Phillip Witthöft
Master in: Chemistry
College/University: University of Hamburg
PIER research field: Nanoscience
Research topic: Realtime observation of nanoparticle melting
Further research interests:
plasmonic photothermal therapy, fluorescence enhancement via plasmon-exciton coupling
Research group: Institute for Physical Chemistry / Campus UHH
Supervisor/s of thesis: Prof. Dr. Alf Mews (UHH), Prof. Dr. Gerhard Grübel (DESY)
Special features about the research group:
Broad range of topics from plasmonics and noble metal nanoparticles to synthesis and characterization of semiconductor nanocrystals with different dimensionalities. We are very much involved in the educational system at our campus so that a lot of contact to students is one of the main particularities on doing research at the Uni Hamburg main campus.
I plan to submit my thesis in: December 2018
This is what brought me to Hamburg/Benefits from PIER (Cooperation of DESY and Universität Hamburg):
The focus on education and the great interdisciplinarity brought me to PIER. After my first two years, this position totally fits my expectations which means the interdisciplinary contact to other student in the PIER Hemlholtz Graduate School and all possibilities that are combined to this networking process.
My plans for my career after my PhD:
Work, which gives me fun. Mainly a job where I`m responsible for the work of others and where I can bring my own ideas with me.
Hobbies/Outreach: track & field, playing guitar, brewing beer
My favorite place in Hamburg: sports facility in the northern part of the city park, near the planetarium
