Due to the ongoing coronavirus COVID-19 outbreak the starting date of the improvisation theater workshops is postponed at least until early April.

The PIER Office is planning on shifting the workshops to a new date as soon as the situation will allow us to do so. We will reach out to everyone originally registered for this event as soon as we have a new date and time available.

Elena Kaufman, science skills coach and trained stage actor, will offer a weekly workshop for scientists using elements of improvisation theatre.

The course is very practical, and all participants should be prepared to move around, practice new games, and be ready to challenge shyness and fears. Please wear comfortable clothing and get ready for some fun.

Often we find ourselves challenged in life and work situations such as job interviews, scientific presentations, group discussions, and even conference dinners. How can we be our authentic selves and give the best impression? What if we are tongue-tied because of our fear of saying the wrong thing? What if there was no wrong thing?

Background: Theatre improv pioneer Keith Johnstone created games and techniques to prepare actors to be more spontaneous and less afraid of their audience. These classes will adapt improv theatre games and role plays for actors to suit academic scientists’ needs.

Trainer: Elena Kaufman is the founder of Creative Communications EK where she trains academics in the soft skills of presentations, job talks, and interviews. She worked as a lecturer in English at Hamburg University (Anglistik/Amerikanistik, and Fachsprachzentrum) and now teaches in companies. Elena is a trained stage actor and director from Vancouver, Canada.
