PIER PhD Seminar 2018

7 November 2018 - 6 February 2019

PIER PhD seminar: A lab visit at the Euopean XFEL in 2017. Photograph: Giovanni Rabuffo

The aim of the PIER PhD seminar is that all participants introduce their PhD project to each other in a way that PhD students from different research fields are able to understand and to profit from the presentations.

Furthermore, the audience gives feedback to the speaker so that he/she can improve his/her way of presentation.

The seminar is from PhD students for other PhD students. Lab visits are welcome as well as unconventional ideas and ways of presenting.

What you will learn as a speaker:

You will train yourself in how to break down your thesis to the most important issues and how to find words that are understandable for PhD students who are not experts in your research field. And you will also learn how to answer unexpected questions which might cast a new light on your thesis/research project.

What you will learn as a listener:

You get to know other recent PhD projects in the PIER research and competence fields, pick methods and ideas which might throw new light on your thesis/research project and you will strengthen your network with PhD students who are in the same situation as you.

According to the PHGS training programme (category B), all full members are requested to take part in the PIER PhD seminar for at least one semester and to hold a presentation/lab visit/etc. Associated members are of course welcome. The seminar is open and recommended for PhD students in their first year. The number of participants is limited to 12. The PIER PhD Seminar is offered twice a year. The next PIER PhD Seminar will start in spring 2019.
