A Graduate Education Program at DESY in Cooperation with Universität Hamburg
In the recent call for PIER Seed Projects, five proposals have been selected by the jury to receive seed funding out of the PIER Idea Fund. 13 applications had been submitted to the PIER Office until the deadline on April 30th, 2018. The successful proposals are from the PIER research and competence fields Infection and Structural Biology, Nanosciences, Photon Science, and Accelerator Research. For the five projects, DESY, Universität Hamburg (UHH) and the University Clinic of Eppendorf (UKE) will allocate a total funding amount of more than 240,000 Euros over the course of two years.
The selected proposals convinced the jury because of their excellent scientific quality and originality and their focus on cross-institutional collaboration. In some cases, the intended cooperation even goes beyond the scope of the PIER partners and includes researchers from further research institutions on the Bahrenfeld campus as co-applicants. Among them are scientists from Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM), European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) and Max Planck Institute for the Structure and Dynamics of Matter (MPSD). BNITM and EMBL are two of the founding partners of the Centre for Structural Systems Biology (CSSB) that was established on the Bahrenfeld campus in 2017.
“This intense networking of scientists from different research institutions on the Bahrenfeld campus is something that we as jury members found particularly impressive”, Prof. Franz Kärtner, Chairman of the PIER Executive Board said. “The more cross-linkages there exists between institutions through research activities here on campus, the better because it strengthens the multi-disciplinary character of the Bahrenfeld research campus.”
The recent call for PIER Seed Projects was the eighth since the founding of PIER in 2011. Besides providing seed money for joint DESY and Universität Hamburg research projects, PIER also supports scientific workshops and short visits of international researchers. The overall aim of the activities within the scope of the PIER Idea Fund is to promote the development and implementation of excellent research ideas and projects based on the cooperation between DESY and Universität Hamburg researchers. Applications for PIER Workshops and PIER Short Visits can be continually submitted. Find out more.
