A Graduate Education Program at DESY in Cooperation with Universität Hamburg
22 January 2019
On 21-22 January 2019, researchers from different Hamburg research institutions met with colleagues from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) in Hamburg Bahrenfeld to sound out future collaboration opportunities.
The Hamburg-MIT/Boston Workshop was organized by PIER with financial support of the Hamburg Ministry of Science, Research and Gender Equalities (Behörde für Wissenschaft, Forschung und Gleichstellung, BWFG).
About 40 Hamburg and Boston researchers (11 of them from MIT, one from Harvard, one from Boston University) from the fields of particle and astroparticle physics, nanoscience and photon science presented current research activities and explored possible synergies. During the productive workshop discussions, many links for potential research collaboration between DESY, UHH, European XFEL and MIT (and further Boston research institutions) could be identified and will be further pursued in the coming months.
The workshop is part of a whole set of networking and seed funding activities organized by PIER with financial support of BWFG in order to establish a research network between Hamburg research institutions and MIT. The activities focus on the PIER research and competence fields Infection and Structural Biology, Photon Science, Nanoscience, Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Accelerator Research and Theoretical Physics. The network is based on existing contacts of Hamburg and MIT researchers that will be further expanded in the future. The medium term goal is to build up joint structured research (training) programs in research fields carrying a particularly high future potential for both sides. In order to realize these programs, the participating researchers will jointly apply for external funding in suitable formats.
