More than 100 PhD and master's students have attended the sixth PIER Graduate Week from 23 - 26 September 2019 in Hamburg's Center for Free-Electron Laser Science.

The four-day workshop and lecture week, in which national and international speakers had offered a wide range of introductory and focus courses in the PIER research fields Particle and Astroparticle Physics, Nanoscience, Photon Science, and Infection and Structural Biology was well received by students and speakers alike.

The graduate week's main objective was to introduce PhD students to neighbouring research fields, and to offer stimulating specialists' lectures from both national and international experts, thereby broadening the interdisciplinary understanding and exchange among young scientists on Bahrenfeld campus.

A scientific colloquium, an industry lecture and workshops on career orientation and presentation skills complemented the programme. During the graduate week, joint coffee breaks, lunches and get-togethers provided opportunities for informal discussions, exchange of ideas, and socialising.

Poster prize

To promote the interdisciplinary exchange between the students, the participants of the graduate week were invited to present their research projects in a poster session. A jury, consisting of Prof. Andreas K. Hüttel (University of Regensburg) and Prof. Robin Santra from Universität Hamburg and DESY awarded three PhD students with a poster prize: Valerija Music ("Ultrafast Photoelectron Circular Dichroism Changes in 1-Iodo-2-Methylbutane"), Immo Bahns ("Interaction of powerful electro-magnetic fields with Bragg reflectors"), and Thorben Schmirander ("Bychkov-Rashba Spin-Orbit Coupling effects in a multi-band tight-binding model of graphene"). Congratulations to the three awardees!

Industry talk and scientific colloquium

In the evening sessions, two speakers addressed a broader audience: Rebeca Gonzalez Suarez of Uppsala University in Sweden talked about "When will the LHC come full circle?" Dr. Gonzalez, who has recently been appointed assistant professor in Uppsala's Department of Physics and Astronomy, gave an introduction to the LHC and its experiments with a small overview of what has been accomplished in the last decade, to then discuss what the future could hold in store.

In the industry talk, Dr. Mark Hartney, SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory, Standford University and Breakthrough Energy Ventures talked about "Challenges and Opportunities in Energy Storage". Dr. Hartney's talk covered many of the challenges and opportunities in the evolving energy future and highlighted not only latest developments in energy storage but system wide challenges and alternative approaches.
