A Graduate Education Program at DESY in Cooperation with Universität Hamburg

Almost 100 DESY Summer Students have enjoyed an informal information evening and barbecue in the DESY canteen.
The PIER Helmholtz Graduate School had invited the the "Summies", who are currently working in DESY reserach groups. Lead coordinator of the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School gave an overview of graduate life on Campus Bahrenfeld and invited the Summies to consider starting a PhD at DESY or Universität Hamburg.
The “Summies” are integrated into the practical work within DESY's research groups, thus gaining an intensive insight into everyday scientific life. In addition, the nearly 50 female students and about 60 male students are taught the experimental and theoretical basics of accelerator, X-ray, particle and astroparticle physics in an extensive lecture programme.
“The exchange between students is an important factor,” says Summer Students co-organiser Olaf Behnke. “The mix of cultures and nationalities creates an inspiring climate that is also typical for many of our research collaborations - science connects.”
Each summer, DESY offers undergraduate students in physics, related natural science disciplines or computing the possibility to participate in the research activities of the laboratory. In 2019 the program takes place from July 16 to September 5.
