A Graduate Education Program of Universität Hamburg in Cooperation with DESY
Universität Hamburg, the largest research and educational institution in northern Germany, combines a diverse curriculum with outstanding research. With its more than 40,000 students, Germany’s third-largest university offers a broad range of subjects and numerous interdisciplinary focal topics. In addition, it has a far-reaching cooperation network that encompasses top institutions at the regional, national and international levels.
The outstanding research in biology, chemistry and physics as well as in medicine at the University Hospital in Eppendorf (UKE) plays a key role in enabling doctoral candidates to obtain a first-rate education within the PIER network.
Synergies for the PIER Helmholtz Graduate School
The Faculty of Mathematics, Informatics and Natural Sciences (MIN-Faculty) has maintained close scientific relations with DESY for decades and operates several physics institutes at the DESY research campus in Hamburg-Bahrenfeld. The faculty is partner in the new Centre for Free-Electron Laser Science (CFEL) as well as in the “Centre for Structural Systems Biology” (CSSB). The research activities on “Matter and the Universe” (which includes the nanosciences) and “Infection Research and Structural Biology” are definited research focuses of the Universität Hamburg.
